Fat Shaming vs Fat Praising

Fat shaming is judgemental, cruel and brings nothing but negativity to the table, in a word it is bullying. However the new culture that is forming in its place, one which I have termed “fat praising”, is equally, if not more dangerous.

Of course people shouldn't be judged or bullied based on any aspect of their physical appearance, to do so is despicable. However they equally shouldn't be lauded for possessing physical traits that have been proven to pose high health risks. Being obese or overweight is a ticking time bomb in terms of a multitude of diseases, it is also the sign of an unhealthy diet. Congratulating people for being unhealthy is a dangerous path to start trekking down. It shouldn't be that there is one desirable weight or appearance, everyone should of course feel happy and comfortable with the body they possess, however to concentrate only on this aspect of yourself is just as shallow as the prevailing culture people are fighting. There is no difference between being fat and proud versus being thin and proud. Everyone, fat or thin, should be far more concerned about their actual health.

Everyone should be trying to live as healthily as they can, not to be like some woman/man on a poster or in a magazine, but for themselves, as well as for their friends and family. A healthy individual will live a fuller, more energetic, longer life; this is what people should be striving for, no-one should be bullied into it, but equally no one should be praised for their laziness in not trying to achieve it.
